Relationship Status: It's Complicated

The radical flank effect turns out to depend on who's reading

The idea has been around in social-movement research for years: a disruptive fringe can make the moderates beside them look reasonable by comparison. Block a motorway, throw soup at a painting, and suddenly the people asking politely for climate policy seem like the sensible option. A 2024 experiment put numbers to it and found the effect was real, and positive. But an experiment is a clean room. What happens in the actual churn of news coverage, over years, across a divided readership?

Lukas Mayrhofer and colleagues at the University of Vienna went and looked. Their longitudinal analysis in npj Climate Action examines two years of German climate reporting, 2,376 news articles and more than 225,000 reader comments, using large language models to score each one for stance and for anger. The moderate group is Fridays for Future. The radical one is Last Generation, the movement known for gluing itself to roads. When coverage of Last Generation spiked, support for Fridays for Future rose in news articles and in the comment sections of left-leaning outlets, and fell in the comments under right-leaning ones. The same protest, read two ways.

That split is the finding. The radical flank effect is not a law that fires the same way for everyone; it runs through the reader's politics before it reaches the moderates. And it does not last. Over longer stretches, the short-term bump washed out entirely. Anger in the coverage moved opinion too, but radical protest held no special power there, ordinary climate coverage did the same work.

For anyone trying to read what protest does to public opinion, this is a useful correction to a tidy story. The effect is real, but it is bounded in time and split along the lines people already stand on. A movement cannot assume its radical wing buys goodwill for its moderates, because half the audience is drawing the opposite conclusion from the same front page.

The biggest food footprint belongs to the people who could most afford to shrink it

Diets vary more in their environmental cost than you'd guess: footprints range more than fivefold within a single country. A model called MATILDA, built by Oliver Taherzadeh at Leiden with Martin Brückner of WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) among the co-authors, maps that spread across 165 countries. The heaviest diets belong to young, highly educated urban men; the lightest to older rural women with less schooling, who in fact eat more plant-based food, not less. Which stands the usual "eat less meat" message on its head: it is rarely aimed at the well-off, well-educated group that turns out to do the most damage.

A camp that went up just before the ice closed in

Kammern-Grubgraben, in Lower Austria, is a well-known open-air site of the Last Glacial Maximum, the coldest stretch of the last Ice Age, when much of Central Europe's population pulled back south as the climate turned against them. Its main layer, dense with stone structures and reindeer bone, sits right in that cold window. Now a team led by Marc Händel at the Austrian Academy of Sciences reports an older find complex at the site, laid down to within a few centuries of the Last Glacial Maximum: people on the land in the narrow interval just before the cold shut it down.

Your skin bacteria may be making you itch

Itch in eczema has a prime suspect: Staphylococcus aureus, whose V8 enzyme trips the nerves that register itch. But it is not the only skin microbe carrying that kind of enzyme. Jan-Philipp Wittlinger at the University of Vienna, with colleagues at the Medical University of Vienna, screened the everyday commensal residents of the skin, the harmless background flora, and found several of them produce closely related glutamyl-endopeptidases with the same itch-relevant activity. The bacteria you carry without a second thought may be quietly adding to the scratch. The work is a preprint, not yet peer reviewed, so it comes with the usual caveat, but it widens the cast of "bad actors".

Fourteen projects, twelve of them in Vienna

The Oesterreichische Nationalbank named the winners of the first 2026 round of its Jubiläumsfonds, the anniversary fund that has backed Austrian basic research since 1966. Fourteen projects share roughly EUR 3.2 m., and twelve of them sit at Vienna institutions, a reminder of how much of the country's economic and social-science research is concentrated here. The slate leans heavily toward money, markets and society.

Bernhard Haslhofer at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna will trace how a stablecoin losing its peg can spread contagion through a crypto ecosystem, one currency dragging down the next. Lorenzo Navarini at the University of Vienna will study who actually gains and who is quietly sorted out when higher-education systems reform. And Susanne Schwab, also at the University of Vienna, turns to the way income advantage passes from one generation to the next, the head start nobody earns.

Two projects in this fortnight's Crossref data mark the spread of what the WWTF funds, from the atmosphere over Vienna to the genomes of the Iron Age. Bradley Matthews at the Environment Agency Austria and colleagues of the Vienna Urban Carbon Laboratory (VUCL) report tall-tower isotope measurements that pull apart the sources of the city's carbon dioxide, sorting the fossil signal from the biological one in the air above the rooftops (ESR20-030, with ESR24-021 co-funding). Knowing which emissions come from traffic and heating rather than plants and soil is what turns a citywide carbon target into something a policymaker can actually steer.

Reading a very different kind of signal, Aigerim Rymbekova, Martin Kuhlwilm and colleagues at the University of Vienna sequence the remains of the Saka, a nomadic people of the Iron Age steppe, and trace how separate ancestral lineages met and mixed in a single population at Boz-Barmak in what is now Kyrgyzstan (VRG20-001, Navigating landscapes of admixture).

Who gets to have a bird named after them

Roughly a fifth of the world's bird species carry someone's name: a warbler for a duke, a finch for a general. A team including Bernd Lenzner at the University of Vienna ran 2,416 of these names through a global network analysis and found a clear pattern under the honorifics. Most birds named after a person are named after someone from a country where the bird does not even live, and overwhelmingly after scientists, aristocrats and army officers of the old colonial empires. The naming peaked exactly when those empires were expanding. The researchers even built a Colonial Exposure Index, and the more heavily a country had been colonised by a given empire, the more of its birds ended up honouring that empire's men. The label looks neutral. Its history is anything but. One lighter note from the data: lately the names have started to shift, toward local people and conservationists, which is to say toward the places the birds actually come from.
